Guess I need to get the hang of Substack. I came because you posted on Facebook that you were going to be here and I want to keep up with one of my favourite authors and friends!

You are very busy. Being a novelist takes incredible discipline. I like your 3 tasks and that your goals are as little as 15 minutes. Keep up the good political work.

Thanks, Carl. When I was writing The Bookseller, my kids were very small and I truly only had 15 minutes a day. I got a first draft done that way, though. These days, I have more free time but manage to fill it up, as we all do. And then there are those distractions. Compartmentalizing the political work helps...it reduces my desire to doomscroll.

Love this entry!! I think you wrote it with me in mind—because, after all, I am the center of my universe.

Hi Cynthia, I love your work! Thank you for the motivational article! It does help to have goals for each day. This way we can concentrate and get things done despite the autocratical monologue coming from our Government. It sickens me daily and I have found it hard to really get much done the past two months. It seems like 2 years really! I also love to ride my bike trainer every morning, although my husband told me I needed to take a day off today! I kind of get a bit fanatical about working out once I've found something that really helps me. I think it is most helpful to my mental health next to my cardio.

I agree, Kat -- movement is vital for mental as well as physical health. And yes, those small goals provide a sense of accomplishment. Enjoy your biking!

Just finished "Orbital" by Samantha Harvey—a beautifully written reflection on the state of the Earth and humanity by 6 fictional astronauts orbiting in the space station

Thank you, Judy. These are small steps, but taking any steps is better than taking no steps.
